Suzi recently posted this idea on the MFLresources "forum" (Yahoo group). I'd like to try this with a Y8,9 or 10 group. This is how she described it: "I often get pupils to do something called a live listening where I prepare a similar text to the one they are expected to revise for controlled assessment and divide class in 2. Grp 1 write the first letters of everything I say (eg JSAEF _ Je suis alle en France) and group 2 draw pictures (which tend to depict nouns eg Eiffel Tower/French flag). At the end of the exercise,a pupil from group 1 joins a friend from group 2 and in pairs they try to reconstruct the story on paper. When they have done their best, you give them the original to compare and then have a class discussion about the sorts of mistakes they made eg adj endings, incorrect verb tenses. This is v successful in my experience and encourages pupils to do the same to help them to prepare for their own revision (also slightly less tedious) and as

Just got back from Washington and New York and I have to say it was pretty amazing all round. In "DC" we stayed at the stunningly civilised Willard hotel ("where the presidents stay"), just close by the White House. Elspeth did her conference thing for a couple of days, whilst I did some sight-seeing and there was plenty to do. Washington was still under the snow and was pretty beautiful for it. First day proper we did an open top bus ride, along with Elspeth's Australian colleague Betty. That was a lot of fun, if a tad chilly. We stopped off in Georgetown with its hill-top cathedral and rather bohemian streets - quite European. Elsp and I went to a jazz club one night to listen to Heidi Martin. Nice. I walked a lot: Capitol Hill, Union Station, the Air and Space Museum. Betty, Elspeth and "did" the Washington monument, the Lincoln Memorial and the White House. I have posted on MYLO before. MYLO stands for MY Open Languages and is due to come on stream this spring for French, German, Spanish and Mandarin. There has recently been a meeting for MFL teachers with a particular interest in the field of ICT and languages. L'information fait le tour du web et ne cesse de flatter l'égo des hommes français. Car ce serait bien eux qui possèderaient les pénis les plus longs d'Europe. Mais si le classement est relayé partout dans la presse ces derniers jours, l'étude daterait en fait de 2008, d'après le magazine Têtu. Ainsi, le pénis d'un homme français en érection mesurerait en moyenne 15,48 centimètres, contre  15,36 pour les Suédois (second du classement) et 15,17 cm pour les Estoniens (troisième du podium). Les Grecs fermeraient la marche avec un pénis long de 12,18 centimètres. Mais cette étude est quelque peu discutée également du fait que les données récoltées proviennent d'hommes qui se seraient eux-mêmes mesurés. Reste à savoir alors si les Français ont bel et bien le plus long pénis d'Europe ou s'ils sont juste les plus prétentieux. Article tiré de Zigonet 

Médecins Sans Frontières a mis à notre disposition des vidéos accompagnées de fiches de travail. Chaque clip ne dure qu'une minute ou deux. Les fiches sont en format Word. Il y a aussi des transcriptions qu'on pourrait adapter pour créer d'autres exercices. C'est un site pratique, gratuit et éducatif. Cela ouvrira les yeux des élèves. http://www.msf.org.uk/french

I'm going to try out our set of Easispeak USB mikes very soon. To start with I'm going to prepare a simple lesson with my Y7 and Y8 groups in an ICT room. I'll prepare a dialogue for them to read aloud with a partner. We'll do some group repetition to get the pronunciation fixed (I do quite a bit of this with groups). Then I'll have them record their conversation on to the microphones. They can then plug in the mike to their computer and pick up thr recorded file to listen to. They can listen with headphones, one at a time, give themselves a mark out of ten (AfL - yawn!).  Then they can have a second go. I want to keep this first lesson simple, but i think they'll find it quite fun and it'll give them a chance to work on their accents and intonation.
