La Jeanne d'Arc livrée aux Anglais

Selon un article paru dans Le Monde le porte-hélicoptères Jeanne d'Arc va être démantelé en Angleterre par la société Able UK. Il rejoindra alors le vieux porte-avions Clémenceau qui en train d'être désossé dans le même chantier.

En décembre la Jeanne d'Arc quittera Brest pour son dernier tour du monde puis, vieux de 35 ans, le bateau qui a servi de vaisseau de guerre, navire-école et ambassade flottante, terminera sa carrière, paraît-il, dans le chantier le plus concurrentiel de l'Europe.

Le lien entre Jeanne d'Arc et l'Angleterre n'est pas oublié par les marins français qui préféreraient que le navire soit démantelé ailleurs que dans le pays de leur ancien adversaire. (Ou devrais-je dire leur adversaire ancien?)

Cette nouvelle provoque le même sentiment que j'ai eu il y a plus de 15 ans quand les Anglais ont décidé que le terminus anglais de l'Eurostar serait la gare de Waterloo.

    Loin des yeux, loin du coeur...
    Aucun, pas même la moinde petite pensée pour toi de la part de tous ceux que tu as transporté.
    J'ai HONTE pour eux.
    Quant à moi, bien que tardivement, car je viens seulement de prendre connaissance de l'article relatant ton démantèlement chez les "Goddons" comme il te plaisait de les nommer, et étant donné que j'ai eu l'immense honneur, avec mon mari, de monter à ton bord, le 28 juin 2001 chaperonnés par M. David Saix, le commissaire de bord de l'époque, il est impératif que je témoigne de mon indignation pour le triste sort que l'on ose te réserver, chez les ...
    Depuis quelques temps c'est la dégringolade autour de toi :
    - D'année en année les effectifs pour ta fête nationale à Paris - tous les deuxièmes dimanche de mai - brillent par leur absense, et le pompon en 2009 c'est qu'il a fallu aux quelques fidèles présents chanter La Marseillaise, mais eux au moins connaissaient les paroles...
    - Sans oublier, la fermeture prochaine du Musée de Jeanne d'Arc à Rouen, et parait-il celui de Chinon, …

For this post, I am drawing on a section from the excellent book by Rod Ellis and Natsuko Shintani called Exploring Language Pedagogy through Second Language Acquisition Research (Routledge, 2014). Skill acquisition is one of several competing theories of how we learn new languages. My wife and I often listen to Radio Paradise, a listener-supported, ad-free radio station from California. They've been playing this song by Zaz recently. I like it and maybe your students would too. I shouldn't really  reproduce the lyrics here for copyright reasons, but I am going to translate them (with the help of another video). Longman's Audio-Visual French

I'm sitting here with my copies of Cours Illustré de Français Book 1 and Longman's Audio-Visual French Stage A1 . I have previously mentioned the former, published in 1966, with its use of pictures to exemplify grammar and vocabulary. In his preface Mark Gilbert says: "The pictures are not... a mere decoration but provide further foundation for the language work at this early stage." He talks of "fluency" and "flexibility": "In oral work it is advisable to persist with the practice of a particular pattern until the pupils can use it fluently and flexibly. Flexibility means, for example, the ability to switch from one person of the verb to another..." Ah! Now, the Longman offering, written by S. Moore and A.L.
