I’ve been busy adding new resources to frenchteacher over the last month. I’ve been focusing mainly on intermediate (GCSE) and advanced level resources. I’ve taken advantage of my recently discovered France Info archive to make some useful video listening worksheets, for example. Providing interesting listening input at the right level is one of the best things we can do as language teachers. All this listening is also good for my own French!
Note that I am keeping in mind the feedback from my last subscriber survey, so for instance I’ve produced another Foundation Tier reading comprehension exam.
Here are the newest resources:
GCSE (intermediate)
- A GCSE Foundation Tier reading exam. This is the third one on the site for Foundation Tier. It is close in format to the AQA-style but can be used with any board. Answer key provided.
- Video listening for Higher Tier GCSE (intermediate). A report on a recent study about how eating organic food may reduce the risk of illness and cancer. This would work with a really good top set group in Y11. Could also be an interesting filler lesson with advanced level groups (even though it's not an A-level sub-theme). it's interesting anyway! A good opportunity to explain the difference between correlation and causation.
- Video listening (Higher GCSE). This is a hard one for very good classes. It's an explanation of climate change with gap-fill (with options) and questions in English.
- Three tenses crossword - past, present and future. Get the right verb form. Could be used in Y10.
- A narrow reading lesson plan on the topic "How well do you sleep?". matching, "find the French2, speaking and writing. Teacher's notes included.
A-level
- Video listening. A 59 second report from France 2 about the advance of French in the world, notably in Africa. A short list of words to help, then a scaffolded gap-fill and translation into English. Would suit Higher Tier GCSE (intermediate). Answers provided as usual.
- Video listening. This is a report about a new initiative for reforming the French prison system. The exercise is to compare written sentences with what is actually said, underline and replace incorrect words. Opportunity for oral discussion too. This fits with an AQA A-level syllabus sub-theme.
- Video listening. A short (42 second) report from France 2 about cinema box-office sales in the world and France in 2017. Students have to identify and correct differences between sentences and the transcript. Some useful data for A-level AO4.
- Audio listening linked to audio-lingua.eu. This was kindly sent to me by Elizabeth Raouf. An easy audio passage with translation into French to do based on the recording. Merci Elizabeth! You might even try this with a very good GCSE group.
- Video listening. This is a report about the daily life of a prison warder in a Poitiers prison. Gap-fill and a possible role-play. Good for the AQA A-level sub-theme about how criminals are treated.
- Grammar: A sentence combining and translation exercise about using the relative pronoun dont.
- Video listening. This is a recent report from France Info about housing the homeless in public buildings in Paris. Questions in French. Answers given. Perfect for Year 2 of the A-level course.
- Video listening. A news report about the Front national changing its name to Rassemblement national. Gap-fill with options. Nice verb used at one point: dédiaboliser (to detoxify). It won't work.
I also have added to the Teacher's Guide pages of the site an article about teaching with written texts. It is a step-by-step beginner's guide for teaching an intermediate level written text. It's one approach of many, but a sequence which can work very well ans is adaptable to different groups and levels. Do check out the Teacher's Guide pages for lots more advice for MFL teachers.
