Further ideas for exploiting narrow listening and narrow reading tasks

Many readers will be familiar with the concept of narrow listening and narrow reading, as Gianfranco and I describe it in our books. Students are given between four and six short paragraphs, each one containing similar language so that the same chunks can be recycled as often as possible. I have a good number of resources like this on frenchteacher (in the Y8 and Y9 pages). With my resources, I typically include exercises such as true/false, and "which person is saying this"? (See the example at the bottom of this post.) But if you want to take these short texts further, providing more repetitions, there are all sorts of ways of doing this, some of which you might like to include in your own repertoire if you fancy mixing things up a bit.

By the way, many of these activities can be done if you are working on a single text.

I've produced this checklist, to which you could add your own ideas. I've put them in random order, but you could fine-tune your lesson by focusing on the easier, receptive ones first, before progressing to the more challenging ones which require more memory and output.


  •   Dictation (e.g. traditional, delayed, running, gapped, paired, paired gapped).
  •   QA – tell students they are one of the young people in the texts. Ask questions which students can respond to orally or in writing (or orally THEN in writing).
  •   Translation into English.
  •   Delayed copying – display a text on the board for 30 seconds, then ask students to write what they can from memory. Provide a gapped version if the class needs it.
  •   Aural gap-fill – give the class starts to sentences which they must complete orally or in writing. You could work through each text in turn.
  •   Faulty transcript – provide a version of the texts with errors to find (e.g. spelling, wrong choice of vocabulary).
  •   Which person? (from memory) – read a paragraph and ask the class to identify which person was talking. The texts could be simplified when read aloud.
  •   Correct my false statement – read false statements based on the texts. Students have to correct them by looking at the text.
  •   Reading aloud – in pairs, individually with ears covered or whispered.
  •   Disappearing text – display a whole text on the first slide, then remove some words from the second slide, then more from the third slide. This can be done “old school” by rubbing off words from a version you wrote on the whiteboard.
  •   Sentence Stealer – play the well-known game, choosing 12 sentences from your source texts.
  •   Read aloud and change – in pairs, students take turns to read aloud a paragraph making as many changes as they can while keeping the content comprehensible.
  •   Mentioned or not? – as students look at the source texts, read aloud statements which students have to mark as mentioned in the text or not. Mini-whiteboards could be used.
  •   Translate and copy – read aloud short sentences either taken directly from the texts or adapted from them. Students use the texts to translate into L2.
  •   Interpreter – the texts are hidden. Read aloud sentences from the texts or adapted from them, which students must instantly translate into L1 or take notes from.
  •   Reported speech – model how to say “he/she says that…”, then in pairs students report to each other what the people said in the texts.
  •   In the text or not? – read aloud individual words or short chunks. Students note if the word or chunk was used or not.
  •   Check my pronunciation – read aloud sample sentences from the text. Make one deliberate pronunciation error per sentence. Students note and correct the error. 
  •  Summary – this high-level output and memory task just gets students to summarise from memory what each person said in the texts.

Les réseaux sociaux sont très importants dans ma vie. Je passe une heure par jour en ligne à communiquer avec mes copines. J’aime partager des photos et des petites vidéos. Je vais sur Whatsapp et TikTok, mais je n’aime pas Facebook et Twitter. Mes parents utilisent Facebook souvent.

Je trouve qu’il y a trop de publicités, mais je n’y fais pas attention.

Je pense aussi qu’il y a trop d’informations qui ne sont pas vraies ou qui sont complètement bizarres.

Les réseaux sociaux ne sont pas très importants pour moi. A mon avis les gens passent trop de temps à partager des messages et des photos au lieu d’être actif - sortir ou faire du sport par exemple.

Je préfère voir mes amis, par exemple aller au café ou chez eux.

En plus, les informations qu’on trouve en ligne sont souvent fausses. Je vais sur Whatsapp de temps en temps pour chatter. On parle de l’école.

Je ne pourrais pas vivre sans les réseaux sociaux. Pendant les confinements du Covid, c’était indispensable pour rester en contact, par exemple avec Zoom ou Google.

Je partage beaucoup de photos et j’aime chatter sur Whatsapp. Je suis dans plusieurs groupes différents.

Pour les informations je préfère regarder le journal télévisé ou aller sur des sites sérieux. J’écoute la radio aussi de temps en temps – France Infos par exemple.

Je n’ai pas beaucoup de temps pour les réseaux sociaux, parce que j’ai beaucoup d’activités qui prennent mon temps. Par exemple, il y a le travail scolaire, la danse et la lecture. J’adore passer des heures à lire.

Mais je sais que d’autres personnes adorent être connectées aux autres tout le temps. Pour moi ce n’est pas vraiment nécessaire. En plus, je sais que certaines de mes amies ont été victimes de harcèlement. C’est horrible. Moi, je n’ai jamais eu ce problème.

What is the natural order hypothesis?

The natural order hypothesis states that all learners acquire the grammatical structures of a language in roughly the same order. This applies to both first and second language acquisition. This order is not dependent on the ease with which a particular language feature can be taught; in English, some features, such as third-person "-s" ("he runs") are easy to teach in a classroom setting, but are not typically fully acquired until the later stages of language acquisition. What is skill acquisition theory?

For this post, I am drawing on a section from the excellent book by Rod Ellis and Natsuko Shintani called Exploring Language Pedagogy through Second Language Acquisition Research (Routledge, 2014). Skill acquisition is one of several competing theories of how we learn new languages. It’s a theory based on the idea that skilled behaviour in any area can become routinised and even automatic under certain conditions through repeated pairing of stimuli and responses. When put like that, it looks a bit like the behaviourist view of stimulus-response learning which went out of fashion from the late 1950s. Skill acquisition draws on John Anderson’s ACT theory, which he called a cognitivist stimulus-response theory. ACT stands for Adaptive Control of Thought.  ACT theory distinguishes declarative knowledge (knowledge of facts and concepts, such as the fact that adjectives agree) from procedural knowledge (knowing how to do things in certain situations, such as understand and speak a language).
