30-minute instant listening tasks

On frenchteacher.net, on the Y10-11 page (GCSE/Level A2), I have a set of around 20 'instant listening tasks', some at Higher Tier, some at Foundation. The idea is that a teacher can print off the exercises, read the text aloud and give the answers once the exercises have been completed. 

This is a classic example, by the way, of the 'listening for testing' or Comprehension Approach which teacher Kedi Simpson has described in a very clear blog post. This approach is where a listening task is completed without paying attention to the so-called micro-processes of listening, such as phoneme or syllable recognition or vocab retrieval. The focus is on understanding and getting right answers to questions such as true/false, matching tasks or traditional questions in the target language or English. It makes sense when students have reached a certain level of listening proficiency and is, in fact, the most common way of carrying out listening in classrooms. It also justifiable, especially later in a course, given the nature of the high-stakes exams students will have to take. Students need practice at the type of exercise they will encounter in the exams.

An example of an instant listening task is copied below. Feel free to use it, or translate it into another language. Teachers who subscribe to frenchteacher.net, instead of reading aloud the text, may use the MP3 text-to-speech recording available on the site. The quality is good, if not entirely natural.

After doing the task, it would be useful to hand out the transcript so students can see where they had difficulty or for further exploitation - oral questioning, a 'correcting fasle statements' task, a 'disappearing text' task (with text displayed), easy dictation, or an associated writing task. There are many possibilities which would promote recycling of the material.

Pendant les grandes vacances je suis allée en France. J’ai passé mes vacances sur la côte d’azur Ã  Nice. Je suis partie  avec ma famille en avion.  Nous sommes partis le 4 mai pendant environ deux semaines. Le vol a été fantastique. Pendant le voyage j’ai écouté ma musique, j’ai mangé du poulet et j’ai bu un coca.

Nous avons logé  dans un hôtel qui a coûté 100 euros par nuit. Je préfère loger dans un hôtel parce qu’il y a la piscine et le restaurant mais la chambre était trop petite. Cependant à cet hôtel il y avait un restaurant excellent et un petit gymnase.

Chaque matin, je me suis levée tard. Je suis restée au lit jusqu'à 10 heures. Ensuite je prenais le petit déjeuner tranquillement sur la terrasse ou à la piscine et  j’allais à la plage. Il faisait chaud tout le temps. Je me suis baignée dans la mer et je me suis fait bronzer. Je me suis reposée sur la plage aussi.

J’ai visité la ville deux fois. J’ai fait des achats dans les magasins; j’ai acheté des souvenirs pour moi et mes amis et j’ai visité un musée avec mes parents. Un jour j’ai joué au tennis dans un parc près de l’hôtel. Un soir je suis allée à une discothèque avec ma sÅ“ur.

Finalement, nous sommes rentrés en Angleterre le lundi 18 mai. Quelles vacances !

What is skill acquisition theory?

For this post, I am drawing on a section from the excellent book by Rod Ellis and Natsuko Shintani called Exploring Language Pedagogy through Second Language Acquisition Research (Routledge, 2014). My wife and I often listen to Radio Paradise, a listener-supported, ad-free radio station from California. They've been playing this song by Zaz recently. I like it and maybe your students would too. I shouldn't really  reproduce the lyrics here for copyright reasons, but I am going to translate them (with the help of another video). Longman's Audio-Visual French

I'm sitting here with my copies of Cours Illustré de Français Book 1 and Longman's Audio-Visual French Stage A1 . I have previously mentioned the former, published in 1966, with its use of pictures to exemplify grammar and vocabulary. In his preface Mark Gilbert says: "The pictures are not... a mere decoration but provide further foundation for the language work at this early stage." He talks of "fluency" and "flexibility": "In oral work it is advisable to persist with the practice of a particular pattern until the pupils can use it fluently and flexibly. Flexibility means, for example, the ability to switch from one person of the verb to another..." Ah! Now, the Longman offering, written by S. Moore and A.L.
