Migrants

Je suis cette affaire depuis quelque temps. En septembre dernier les bulldozers ont détruit les camps des migrants dans la région calaisienne. Eh bien, vous ne serez pas surpris d'apprendre que tous les migrants ne sont pas partis. En effet, les 300 qui restent (selon The Guardian) voient leurs abris régulièrement enlevés, grâce à la politique sans pitié des autorités. Selon Jean-Pierre Leclercq, président de l'association caritative Salam, qui distribue des repas chauds, la stratégie de la police est de "faire disparaître" les migrants. C'est une politique de tolérance zéro, même si Eric Besson refuse ce terme.

Résulat? Pas mal de ces migrants, surtout les Afghans, arrivent à Paris. Rémi Féraud, le maire du 10e arrondissement de Paris, prétend que l'Etat ne fournit aucun logement, donc lui, il a ouvert un gymnase et un ancien hôpital. Mais Eric Besson a déclaré qu'ils devront fermer avant la fin du mois.

Selon l'UNHCR (l'agence des Nations Unies responsable des réfugiés) de moins en moins de migrants accèdent au Royaume-Uni depuis Calais, mais un plus grand nombre partiraient via Dunkerque. Dans un même temps le nombre de migrants qui décident de retrouver leur pays natal a augmenté, paraît-il.

Alors, il semblerait que la politique d'Eric Besson ait porté des fruits, mais dans une certaine mesure on n'a fait que déplacer le problème. Je continue à plaindre ces personnes dont certains n'ont pas plus de 13 ans.

For this post, I am drawing on a section from the excellent book by Rod Ellis and Natsuko Shintani called Exploring Language Pedagogy through Second Language Acquisition Research (Routledge, 2014). Skill acquisition is one of several competing theories of how we learn new languages. My wife and I often listen to Radio Paradise, a listener-supported, ad-free radio station from California. They've been playing this song by Zaz recently. I like it and maybe your students would too. Longman's Audio-Visual French

I'm sitting here with my copies of Cours Illustré de Français Book 1 and Longman's Audio-Visual French Stage A1 . I have previously mentioned the former, published in 1966, with its use of pictures to exemplify grammar and vocabulary. In his preface Mark Gilbert says: "The pictures are not... a mere decoration but provide further foundation for the language work at this early stage." He talks of "fluency" and "flexibility": "In oral work it is advisable to persist with the practice of a particular pattern until the pupils can use it fluently and flexibly. Flexibility means, for example, the ability to switch from one person of the verb to another..." Ah! Now, the Longman offering, written by S. Moore and A.L.
