Pour perdre du poids à Noël

Selon des chercheurs en Belgique il vaut mieux faire de l'exercice avant le petit déjeuner.

"Comment compenser les effets néfastes des excès de fin d’année sur notre corps, qui se traduisent pour beaucoup par quelques kg supplémentaires? La stratégie communément adoptée est celle de l’auto-flagellation et des bonnes résolutions un peu trop optimistes pour la nouvelle année. Mais une étude parue le 1er novembre dans le Journal of Physiology et reprise par le blog santé du New York Times suggère une réponse bien plus simple: courir ou faire du vélo avant le petit-déjeuner.
Des chercheurs du département de kinésiologie biomédicale de l’Université de Louvain, en Belgique, ont voulu vérifier si l’exercice à jeun était plus efficace que l’exercice après avoir mangé pour compenser les effets néfastes d’un régime trop riche en calories et en graisses. 

Des volontaires masculins sains de 18 à 25 ans ont reçu un régime hypercalorique, composé de 50% de graisses et 30% de calories que leur régime habituel, pendant 6 semaines. Certains ont effectué des exercices d’endurance avant de prendre un petit-déjeuner riche en glucides, tandis que d’autres ont ingéré le même petit-déjeuner avant les séances d’exercice et bu des boissons pour le sport (également riches en glucides) pendant. Les exercices consistaient en 4 séances de course à pied et de vélo intenses (deux de 90 minutes et deux d’une heure) par semaine. Un troisième groupe n’a effectué aucun exercice physique.
Sans surprise, le poids moyen du groupe qui n’a pas fait d’exercice du tout a augmenté de 3kg. Leur corps a également développé une résistance à l’insuline, la molécule qui aide normalement le sang à extraire le sucre contenu dans le sang, et commencé à stocker de la graisse dans et entre les cellules musculaires, deux symptômes qui peuvent être précurseurs du diabète. Le groupe qui s’est entraîné après avoir mangé a pris en moyenne deux fois moins de poids (1,4kg), et présentait les mêmes symptômes.
Seul le groupe qui s’est entraîné avant le petit-déjeuner n’a pas presque pas pris de poids (0,7kg), n’a pas développé de résistance à l’insuline et a brûlé les graisses supplémentaires plus efficacement. Conclusion des chercheurs:
«Cette étude montre pour la première fois que l’exercice à jeun est plus efficace que l’exercice après avoir mangé pour faciliter les adaptations dans les muscles et pour améliorer la tolérance du corps au glucose et la sensibilité à l’insuline pendant un régime hypercalorique et riche en graisses.»"

How can we make listening more enjoyable and effective for pupils? How can we turn it from a potential chore to something more memorable (and therefore more likely to stick in their long term memories)? I am of the opinion that since humans are "wired" to engage in personal listening and speaking (the expression "social brain" has been used in this context), they may be more interested and attentive when the message comes from a real person rather than a disembodied audio source. (This may or may not be relevant, but research has been carried out which demonstrates that babies pick up phonological patterns better when they listen to a caregiver rather than listen to a tape or watch a video - see here for summaries of research into this area by Patricia Kuhl.)

One easy way to make listening stimulating for pupils is to tell them easy stories in the target language. I was reminded of this while reading Penny Ur's book 100 Teaching Tips (reviewed here

As well as writing resources for the new A-levels, I have in recent months been posting a good range of materials to support the new GCSEs. First exams are not until 2018, but here is what you can find on the site in addition to the many other resources (grammar exercises, texts, video listening etc).

I shall not produce vocabulary lists since the exam board specifications now offer these, with translations.

The Language Teacher Toolkit review

We were delighted to receive a review of The Language Teacher Toolkit from eminent applied linguist Ernesto Macaro from Oxford University. Macaro is a leader in the field of second language acquisition and applied linguistics. His main research interests are teacher-student interaction and language learning strategies pupils can use to improve their progress.

5 great zero preparation lesson ideas

When the pressure is on and there are only so many hours on the week, you need a repertoire of zero preparation go-to activities which promote input and/or practice. Here are five you might well find useful.

1. My weekend

We know that listening is the most important yet often neglected skill for language learning. It's also something some pupils find hard to do. To develop listening skill and provide tailored comprehensible input try this:

You tell the class you are going to recount what you did last weekend and that they have to make notes in English. The amount of detail you go into and the speed you go will depend on your class. Talk for about three minutes. If you spent the whole weekend marking, you can always make stuff up!

You then make some true or false (maybe not mentioned too) statements in the target language about what you said in your account. Class gives hands up (or no hands up) answers. This can then lead into a simple pair work task where pupils make up their own tru…
